Playing Out are a community of local parents who wanted their children to have space to play, freedom to ride bikes, to skip and to get to know their neighbours, just as we did when we were young, without the worry of cars whizzing down the street.
In the summer Playing Out helped several streets in the area organise a traffic free events which allowed the children to play freely in the streets without strong parental supervision.
I took the boys to a couple and they had a wild time. Zooming around on their bikes, writing on the road with coloured chalk, playing games. Such fun.
If you watch the above video, you will see my two boys (towards the end of the video), on their little red & yellow bikes.
Watching this, I am thinking of getting our street closed for the afternoon next summer!

What an amazing thing, how wonderful to see all those children playing together, and adults meeting people for the first time. I can't get enough of community stuff at the moment, I'm inspired!
ReplyDeleteYour boys look very cool - great bikes! x
That looks fabulous fun- where were all the dads though? One weekend per year we have Faringdon Arts Festival, where all the roads get shut off and there's live music in the market square where the grown-ups drink cider and the kids run amok, chalking the streets and generally having a wonderful time late into the evening. Community stuff like that should definitely happen more often! This is Flora and her pal doing just that http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_1gv3CwPYSPg/TDoNcvhnblI/AAAAAAAAAxE/FGMiwxkgun8/s1600/054.JPG Loving your boys on their bikes, they look uber-cool xx
ReplyDeleteWow, what a lovely idea. I hadn't heard of this project - it sound great. Not sure if I could pull it off where we live as it's not strictly residential (more of a high street) but we are planning a street party next year instead!
