1000 posts celebration giveaway - Roddy & Ginger

I have been a long time fan of Virginia's work, her home and her style.  She is an uber talented and a really lovely person too.  It was years ago when I first discovered her, falling head over heels in love with her Yellow Bird Cushion - such a simple scandi inspired design in beautiful moss yellow.  I still swoon over it now.  I asked Virginia is she'd like to take part in my 1000 post giveaway, and luckily she said yes, here is more about her and roddy & ginger...

Please can you introduce yourself and tell us a little about what you do?
I am a freelance designer/illustrator and the designer behind roddy & ginger which I run when I have time alongside my freelance work.

Apart from roddy & ginger what else do you like doing?
My passion at the moment is to make a creative, happy and secure home for my twins - Lucy who ditched university and is now carving out a brilliant career in design PR and Charlie who just this year has been diagnosed with Aspergers which has explained a lot, fortunately he is studying animation at university for which AS seems fairly mandatory! I also love hunting for bargains and ‘props’ in charity shops and markets.

Describe your studio/workspace?
We live in a tall skinny ‘60s town house on top of a hill in SE London. My studio is in the basement, it is light and bright and opens out onto my garden, I am very lucky!

If you could peek into the studio of any designer dead or alive who would it be?
Pablo Picasso.

Please tell us about your current loves...
Photography - I am hooked on instagram at the moment, anyone can create lovely images which must annoy the hell out of professional photographers! I am here -@roddyandginger

Illustration - I hunt out books illustrated by husband and wife team A and M Provensen, I love the humour and charm in their detailed illustrations.

Graphic design – I have been looking at packaging this week for a freelance job, a trip to Fortnum & Mason makes me feel like Holly Golightly in Tiffanys.

Blogs – I have always been a fan of kickcan & conkers and Bloesem, Deborah and Irene both have immaculate taste and the knack of hunting out the new and unusual.

Home/interiors – I am interested and inspired by Scandinavian design, it has always led the way with intelligent, crafted products. I am loving anything by Muuto at the moment. And glad to see that the Scandi design blogs seem to be moving on from exclusively black and white interiors, I see a bit of interest with colour, materials and texture creeping in.

Books – I am always on the lookout for vintage books especially illustrated children’s books from the ‘60s, a golden time for illustration I think.

Magazines – I have Elle Deco on subscription, I still think it is the best UK interiors mag.

Shops – This weeks faves are – &otherstories, Staples (love a mainstream stationery superstore!) Fortnum & Mason, any second hand book shop.

What is a typical work day for you?
There is no typical day. I juggle freelance work, roddy & ginger and using my house as a photographic location so I will be doing any number of things during the day. I spent this weekend scrubbing the decking and painting walls in the garden for an outdoor shoot next week.

What do you love most about what you do?
I love working from home, I can organise my time to suit myself and although it can be a bit stressful at times I love having 3 jobs. With regards to roddy & ginger, I really enjoyed launching my Logpile wallpaper, and I am very exited to be bringing out a new Smalltown wallpaper later this summer.

If you were stranded in the wilds what item would you want with you to survive?
A potato patch, there’s always a meal in a potato.

Where would you like to be in ten years?
Impossible to say. 10 years ago I wouldn’t have dreamed I would be where I am now, so much can happen in 10 years, I am just happy if I enjoy it!

Thank you Virgina, such an interesting insight to your world.  With a home like yours no wonder you are busy with photo shoots (dream space!).

So what do you think of the new designs?  I personally love them! Smalltown and Townplanning have just been launched this week and I am so so lucky and happy to show you them here first, thank you Virginia.

And that's not all!  Virginia is kindly donating, as part of my 1000 posts celebrations, one of her brand spanking new Smalltown or Townplanning cushion to a Littlegreenshed reader!! How cool!!!!
